Is It Worth Bringing a Personal Injury Claim?

Being injured in an accident, whether it be a slip and fall or a motor vehicle accident or something else, can flip your life upside down. All of the sudden, you have the pain and limitations that may be imposed upon you by your injuries. You may be unable to return to work. The medical appointments can seem endless as can the expenses associated with treating your injuries. The last thing you may want to do is talk to a lawyer about bringing a personal injury claim. Bringing such a claim, however, can be vital to getting your life back on track. Is it worth it to bring a personal injury claim? We will talk more on that here.

Is It Worth It to Bring a Personal Injury Claim?

A personal injury claim is a means of recovering the damages you sustained in an accident caused by the negligent action or inaction of another. Compensatory damages, which you can recover through bringing an injury claim include both economic and non-economic damages. Economic damages are those which are easier to quantify. Economic damages can include:

  • Medical expenses
  • The cost of future medical care
  • Lost wages
  • Loss of future earning capacity

These are all things that can be calculated and supported with bills, receipts, paystubs, and other concrete numbers. Non-economic damages, however, lack these supporting numbers, but can be just as real, substantial, and significant as economic damages. Non-economic damages include pain and suffering damages. While it may be difficult to quantify how much an injured party’s suffering is worth, it is still a recoverable hurt in a personal injury claim.

How much will your claim be worth? That will depend on a number of factors, including the nature and extent of your injuries and how they have impacted your day to day life as well as your earning ability. A personal injury claim is, however, intended to try and set victims in a position they would have been had they not suffered harm in the accident. While money cannot undue the experience of being injured in an accident and the road to recovery, it can certainly help a person get their life back on track and alleviate some of the financial toll such a thing can have on a person.
